FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 23, 2025
Lansing, MI – Great Lakes Gun Rights is calling out Republican House Judiciary Chair Sarah Lightner for holding hearings on bills dealing with QR codes on Concealed Pistol Licenses while refusing to hear legislation repealing Michigan’s “Red Flag” gun confiscation law that was passed by Democrats and signed by Governor Whitmer back in 2023.
“When Democrats forced ‘Red Flag’ through in 2023, gun owners were shut out of hearings. Now Republicans are acting no differently,” said Brenden Boudreau, Executive Director of Great Lakes Gun Rights. “Chair Lightner is ignoring an issue — the repeal of ‘Red Flag’ — that helped Republicans win back the House in 2024.”
Boudreau added: “Gun owners sent a clear message: vote for gun control, lose your job. Instead of honoring that mandate, Republican leadership is wasting time on half-measures that no one asked for while ignoring thousands of gun owners who have called the Chair asking for a hearing on the repeal of “Red Flag.”
Every Republican lawmaker in the Michigan Legislature voted against the “Red Flag” bills in 2023. Four Democrat State Representatives who voted for “Red Flag” lost their re-election bids in 2024. Not a single Republican who voted against “Red Flag” lost their bid for re-election.
GLGR is calling on all Michigan gun owners to contact State Rep. Lightner, urging her to immediately hold hearings on House Bills 4138, 4139, and 4140 to fully repeal “Red Flag.”
The three bill package is sponsored by Republican State Representative Jim DeSana and has 24 Republican co-sponsors.
