I couldn’t believe my ears, but she said it.
Just yesterday, Republican House Judiciary Chair Sarah Lightner told members of the Women for Gun Rights group in the House gallery that she wasn’t going to hold hearings on bills to repeal Whitmer’s “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation law, calling it a “waste of my time.”
Give her office a call at 517-373-1773 and let her know what you think about her calling a hearing on repealing “Red Flag” a waste of her time.
As you know, Whitmer’s “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation law violates our Constitutional rights by allowing government agents to confiscate legally-owned firearms without due process based on a mere accusation.
It’s being used to “Red Flag” minor children leading to whole families losing their gun rights.
It’s outrageous and needs to be repealed outright.
But Republicans like State Rep. Lightner thinks holding hearings to get rid of this law is a waste of time.
Oh sure, she’s had to time to give hearings to a myriad of Democrat-sponsored bills and even bills to add a QR code to the back of our Concealed Pistol Licenses, but not to the bills to repeal “Red Flag” that have 26 co-sponsors and that she’s received countless phone calls, emails, and post cards about.
What Lightner is really saying is that it is a waste of her time to fight for your gun rights.
She claims that it’s because it’ll never pass the Democrat-controlled Senate (which is true), but neither will a pile of bills that come before her committee and that the Republican House passes this year (including one they just voted on yesterday!).
Of course, the truth really came out that Speaker Matt Hall will never allow the bills to come to the floor for a vote, so she also carrying water for leadership.
Jacee, she and some of her colleagues are furious that they’ve been getting phone calls, emails, and post cards from gun owners like you, demanding that they stand up and fight for our rights.
They just want gun owners to shut up and go away until they need your vote in 2026.
Republicans almost always run on pro-gun campaign platforms, but far too often, once they are in office, they make every excuse for not taking action.
If they won’t hold hearings on bills to repeal “Red Flag” now, what makes you think they’ll do it if they ever get back complete control in Lansing?
As a friend of mine once said, now is the time for Republicans to practice standing strong for our rights and fighting to repeal these draconian laws so that they are ready to do it if they take back control of the Legislature and Governor’s mansion.
Not only that, giving hearings for these important bills will help mobilize and motivate pro-gun Michiganders who are sick-and-tired of Republicans asking for their votes, but not doing anything once they are in office.
It’s clear that Rep. Lightner and her colleagues need to hear more from their pro-gun constituents.
So please call Rep. Lightner at 517-373-1773 and tell her that holding hearings on “Red Flag” repeal is not a waste of time.
